why isn't there a guide for dummies?

So finding my way around the NYC subway was NOT an easy thing this past weekend. Aided by my comrade Charlie we spend lots of time and wasted plenty of money trying to get to a place we weren't sure existed on the blue line...well i mean the A-C-E line. The subway map is a series of alpha-numberic puzzles littered with diamonds, squares, and circles denoting various tricks the underground system can play. Unless one is experienced it is very easy to get lost and end up not being able to find the chesse at the end of the maze.
Anywho, despite the directions of the map were were able to find our way to quite a few good bars around the city. On Friday we both had gotten up early (6am) to go to work and after I finished I met up with Charlie and we drove up to Queens. We got there Friday night and we proceded to go into the city. We got back to Queens at around 6:30 Saturday morning, making it a full 24 hours that we had both been up and about. I was so tired that I slept until about 2pm. We had a party for a friend who had gotten a big promotion in the NYPD later that evening and then we headed out into the city again that night. We had a very good time and found this place that Charlie had been raving about. They have the BEST falafals that I've ever had and it definetly made my night. After avoiding the bums at Penn Station we managed to sleep our way through our stop on the LIRR (seperate from the subway -- you can drink on this train...i saw many people proudly chugging 40s as the conductor stamped their ticket and moved on) for the second night in a row and this time instead of walking back home in the cold morning air we took a taxi. We didn't get back until 6:40am. Sunday was a day of recovery and relaxation that I thoroughly enjoyed. We had a really good homemade dinner and just hungout at the firehouse and watched The Transporter 2 (worst movie ever.). This morning before we left Charlie and his firehouse was actually called to a working fire, which (since no one was hurt) was cool and provided a little excitement on the last day.
Anywho I'm glad I took this weekend off and I can't wait to go back to work tomorrow (riiiight...)! Since I'm quite tired I'm going to bed at a semi-reasonable hour...maybe not...it's all relative...

there must be a guide for dummies. there is a guide for dummies for everything. did you meet any bonafide subway freaks? those are the best. i refuse to take the taxi in new york city because it lessens the chance of running into a subway freak. and freak, in my books, is a term of endearment. thanks for dropping comments like they were hot all over my blog. it feels loved.
I too am a big fan of public transportation, aparna. Fully agree. Though freaks are occasionally dangerous, they are usually just pure, free, unadulterated entertainment. And that's worth the risk, in my book.
Hey - thanks for stopping by Legwarmers. Nice to see a new face!
